Add those numbers together and here is what you get…

72 + 24 + 24 = 120″ wide

63 + 31.5 + 31.5 = 126″ wide

Now you have a starting point for the scale of a small sectional sofa.

A starting point for a small scale sectional sofa set is 120 - 126″ wide.

As for the stopping point, you can simply add on an additional 24-31.5″. The stopping point is simply the size that you wouldn’t want to go past for risk of the sectional sofa being too large.

I took the liberty of adding 31.5″ to 126″ wide sectional sofa to come up with the stopping point of 157.5″ wide.

Having a stopping point gives you some leeway. By finding a sectional sofa that falls between 120 - 157″, you have room to work with in your small space. Remember to take measurements first because a 157″ sectional sofa may be perfect for one living area, but considered too large for another.

Also, a few simple guidelines on sectional sofa sizes to consider may help.

120-130″ would be perfect for a small scale solution.

145″ would be a nice mid-size range for small homes.

157″ would be a great size if you can afford the space.

Now that we know the specific measurements for a small scale sectional sofa, how should you go about choosing one?

When looking to purchase a sectional sofa, it would be a wise decision to locate a home furnishing store or website that sells each piece individually or as a whole. One company based in New England that employed paid surveys to make administrative determinations regarding their product is the manufacturers of what we will call X Brand Ice Cream.  X Brand Ice Cream was produced by a New England company that wanted to give their ice cream a special quality.  The firm understood that the ice cream industry had some major players in the 70’s, such as Sealtest, Borden, Carvel, Baskin-Robbins and the packaged brands of the big-time supermarkets, such as A&P, Key Food, Shoprite and Pathmark.  The makers of X Brand hired a marketing firm to conduct paid surveys to test their product.  The paid surveys were conducted initially in New England.  Subsequently, there were additional paid surveys in the New York metropolitan area, paid surveys in the Washington DC area, and paid surveys in the Philadelphia-Trenton area. 

 

Since the company’s philosophy was to produce exotic ice cream flavors, the paid surveys would be a great indicator of the preferences of the public. The initial response from the participants of the paid surveys was luke-warm at best.  You must keep in mind that these paid surveys consisted of a taste test of various flavors of ice cream  However, during these paid surveys, neither the name of the company, which was X Brand, nor the name of the flavor of the ice cream was disclosed to those participating in the paid surveys.

 

The results of the initial paid surveys were curious at first, but they taught marketing firms a crucial lesson in the value of paid surveys.  The reason that the people were not that receptive to the different flavors of ice cream was because the paid surveys revealed that the participants felt that the ice cream lacked a pizzazz about it.  Several months later, the same paid surveys were administered once again to the same corps of paid surveys participants.  This time, the name of the brand of ice cream, X Brand (actually a European sounding name), was revealed to these paid surveys takers.  The paid surveys had a completely different outcome.  The participants of these paid surveys approved overwhelmingly of the different flavors of the ice cream.  The reason given in these paid surveys for the change of opinion is because the paid surveys participants believed they were eating ice cream imported to the United States from Europe, presumably Holland or Switzerland.

 

The makers of X Brand then utilized paid surveys to determine which particular flavors they should market, and which others they should not.  The cities that they chose were:

The interesting findings in these paid surveys was that the more affluent the area of the paid surveys, the more favorable the results were.  Additionally, the paid surveys yielded the information that the more affluent the area, the more impressed those tested were with the foreign sounding name, and the more willing they were to pay a higher price for the ice cream. The more exotic-sounding the flavor of the ice cream, the more positive was the response from the paid surveys.

 

These results allowed the manufacturers of the ice cream to concentrate on those areas earmarked in the paid surveys, and X Brand Ice Cream became a staple in the American culture.  The same ice cream that received moderate reviews in the initial paid surveys had received a completely different opinion by the same corps of participants in subsequent paid surveys simply because the brand was given a foreign-sounding name.  The people thought they were purchasing ice cream that was a better value to them than their American counterparts.

In the quest for the essence of doing business with China, Hong Kong is historically speaking a logical port of call. In this dynamic city with a population of more than 7 million, we team up with Daniël Ben-Ezra, Media Director of Spotz Media. December 2005, he severed his ties and set out for China, armed with a pocket sized Lonely Planet. What are his findings so far? Can he confirm the prevailing prejudices about the Chinese and doing business in China? Or does he dispel any form of cultural clash?

The business appeal of China, Hong Kong in particular, is like a red rag to the energetic Daniël Ben-Ezra. This already led him into some typical Asian tours de force; from a stage-managed meeting with an intimidating majority of participants, to binge drinking competitions at business dinners. However, according to him, the corporate gap between Hong Kong and Europe is not that huge. “Of course there are some differences. Promises are easier made than we usually tend to do. And therefore, they are of lesser value. This could be due to the fact that the Chinese, in my experience, avoid conflicts. Consequently they are quick to make promises, even if they don’t really understand what you mean.”

Hierarchy

“If you compare the European way of doing business with that of the Chinese, the importance of networking in China is paramount. Moreover, decisions are invariably made at the top of the pyramid. There is a strong hierarchy. For example, it is a waste of time talking to assistants as they have little or no authority to make decisions. The Chinese are also very bureaucratic, they love the red tape of seals, multiple signatures and copies of forms.”

To put it differently: managing to get in at top level, and not attaching too much value to promises; is that what defines the key to success in Asia? “Of course you should never generalise. To give an impression: even in a relatively small city like Hong Kong (http://www.chinasuccessstories.com/2007/11/06/tax-in-china/), there is a big difference among its inhabitants. Between ‘real’ locals, people born in Kowloon or the New Territories, and Island Chinese. Island Chinese are often American Born Chinese, referred to as ABCs. On the contrary, an American Born Chinese is usually very westernized in his take on the world. In addition the inhabitants of Hong Kong, in comparison to the inhabitants of other Chinese cities, are better educated and more sophisticated. Foreigners can easily get by using English in this Metropolis, whereas on the mainland being able to speak a little Chinese generally proves to be of value.”

Apart from the demographic diversity, there are of course similarities between mainland China and Hong Kong. “The Chinese are equally ambitious and keen to profit from the growth of their super power. The country is developing itself just like the former British colony, to western standards of lifestyle and income. That does not necessarily mean that Europe or the United States of America set the tone. For example Japanese fashion is very trendy and pop stars from South Korea are very popular.”

When it boils down to how to successfully position yourself between all the other budding trendsetters, Daniël Ben-Ezra is more than emphatic. “The Chinese business culture is hard, ambitious and networking is very important. That demands versatility, determination and an open-minded approach, alongside the willingness to learn and work hard: common sense really. If, on top of that, you are able to communicate clearly, be polite and show respect to others, doors will open, which otherwise would have remained firmly closed. In my opinion, that probably is the key to business success in China!”
